This purpose of this seminar is to provide the most up-to-date information related to reimbursement in the subacute and long-term care settings as well as current rehabilitation concepts including the most recent medical literature and protocols addressing care of the frail and institutionalized elderly patient. Discussion topics include problems associated with institutionalization, medical pathologies, pharmacological management, rehabilitative strategies and the impact of managed care, prospective payment system (PPS) and other changes since the Balanced Budget Act of 1997. Specific evaluation tools for many of the common problems affecting older adults in subacute and long-term care environments and treatment protocols for the problems of gait, balance, strength, flexibility, contractures, and endurance will be presented. Case studies and video presentations will be used to facilitate learning of rehabilitation principles in treating the frail elderly and the issues facing health care professional working in these specialized environments.
