Combine GREAT Seminars and online education with the University of Maryland to advance your career!!

GREAT Seminars and the Department of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Science at the University of Maryland School of Medicine have joined forces to provide a geriatric track in the Doctor of Science in Physical Therapy (DScPT) program. Beginning in August 2004, you will be able to apply your continuing education learning with GREAT Seminars to earn academic credit in the DScPT program. The DScPT is a terminal clinical degree that enables graduates to pursue their goals for teaching, administration, and advanced clinical practice.

How the Continuing Education to DScPT Program works…

Twelve – fifteen credits toward the DScPT can be obtained by taking GREAT Seminars courses in combination with on-line course work to receive the full academic course credit. The seminar or home study accounts for 20 hours and the remaining hours are completed through web-based learning to equal 3 credits. The work required for this on-line portion may include participation in real-time chat rooms, making contributions to an asynchronous discussion board forum, or completing written projects.

Three seminars and one home study will qualify for this program. These are as follows:

Seminars:

            - Geriatric Orthopedics

            - Geriatric Neurology

            - Safe Steps

Home Study:

- Documentation and Functional Assessment

There is also an opportunity to complete the scholarly Final Project requirement with an emphasis in Geriatrics.

Students who have taken any of the applicable GREAT Seminars courses since 2002 will be eligible. Registration for this program can begin immediately. DScPT students are admitted in the Fall and Spring, but continuing education seminars can be taken now to apply to the online portion later

The DScPT program is individually designed to meet student goals, combining required core courses with specialty elective courses. The total number of credits required for each student to complete the DScPT degree depends on the professional and academic credentials and experience. Students may qualify for the 31-credit minimum.

Required courses in the DScPT curriculum include:

            Introduction (1 credit)

Essentials of Clinical Management (3 credits)

            Essentials of Epidemiology (3 credits)

Bioethics and Health Care Law (3 credits)
